Stayton Self Defense (SSD) opened in August, 2001 to meet the many physical fitness needs of the growing Santiam Valley. It was born out of a dream of owner/chief instructor, Colt Davis, to reach out to a community through health, nutrition, self defense, family togetherness and all around fun and fitness for all ages.
Colt and his wife, Wanda, as well as co-owner Brian Wiltse together bring over 50 years of martial arts experience between them through their studies in Southern California, Salem, and Portland, Oregon. They, as well as their black belt instructors, ensure quality, up-to-date information by continuously attending seminars and classes for various styles of martial arts.
2008 brought many changes to Stayton Self Defense, including a new focus evidenced by their new school system, Martial Arts Defense Systems, as well as the grand opening of their sister school – Lincoln City Self Defense. Between the two schools, they have 14 instructors teaching classes and private lessons for ages 5 to 95.
Martial arts instruction meets the individual’s physical fitness needs: body toning, strengthening the cardiovascular system and increasing flexibility. Additional benefits include learning practical self defense, improving self confidence, and promotional achievement tests for traditional martial arts training. Students learn respect for flag, instructors, others and themselves.
Our schools are open six days a week and offer group and private classes for all ages. Children’s classes are grouped 5-7 years and 8-13 years. Adult classes are from 14 years and above. Private lessons are also available for an individual’s needs. Martial Arts Defense Systems also offers free consultation to discuss individual needs and goals.
